Do yourself a favour and start at The Empire Cafe right in Mullumbimby, with its delectable treats including epic burgers and vegan delights. Don’t forget to sample a freshly roasted coffee (the aroma is so tempting!) or a cool drink. This venue is licensed so you can enjoy a beer or perhaps a mango daiquiri.
For this verdant part of NSW, we have two top picks for you. Hoopers Mullumbimby is set in a stunning leafy alfresco space offering all your comfort foods including a huge range of their famous juicy burgers for meat and non-meat eaters, fish and chips, share snacks, a selection of delicious salads and an impressive spread of craft beers.
Le Plateau Bakery in the Alstonville Plaza is the place to go if you’re after a special sweet treat like their berry delight eclairs or yummy almond croissants. Of course, they also have a great selection of other cakes, pies, quiches and lovely fresh coffee.

For something a little different, head to the Federal Doma Cafe. This Japanese-inspired café, located within a 90-year-old historical building on the main street in Federal, offers delicious Asian food such as sushi, tempura and miso as well as more western fare including burgers and chips. Don’t worry, vegans ‒ they also have plenty of vegan options for you.
There’s certainly no shortage of international cuisine options in the hills behind the coast with these top restaurant choices. For traditional Thai cuisine, check out Spice It Up Thai right in Mullumbimby (or ‘Mullum’ as the locals refer to it). Here you can share some fantastic Thai dishes such as Massaman curry, Pad Thai or a yummy vegetable and tofu Laksa.
