Keen to get in amongst all the sports and recreational activities available in Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Ballina? We’ve got you covered! Because if there’s one thing that these towns have in common, it’s that they know how to keep active and have fun while doing it.

And whether you’re looking for something fast-paced, or a little more low key, you’re sure to find the speed that suits you. You also don’t have to worry about being a beginner either, as having a go is more important than how you do. Plus, here’s the good news. We’ve done the searching for you, and found a mix of sport and recreation on offer in Byron Bay and surrounds.

Nature and recreation

If you love getting out in nature, then you’re in for a treat with the Vision Walks Eco Tours. They are a team of passionate and experienced local guides, who have a background in environmental science and/or indigenous culture. This not only allows them to elevate each excursion with expert knowledge but also convey a deep cultural connection to the area. Each walk and wildlife tour is unique, with numbers kept low.

Here’s where you can strike out – in a good way! Ballina Ten Pin Bowl is the home of fun and entertainment in the coastal town of Ballina because you’ll always come away from here with a smile on your face. You can play a couple of casual games with friends and family or join a league for something a bit more ‘serious’, and don’t forget to have a round of mini-putt either! It’s also an ideal venue for kid’s birthday parties.

Cherry Street Sports is Ballina’s local bowling and recreational club, but also so much more than that. There are regular weekly activities for the whole family, and you can enjoy dining at their on-site cafe and restaurant. Need somewhere to host a birthday party or special celebration? They can help with that too!

Water sports

Get out on the water with the Byron Bay Surf Club who always welcome new members. There’s a senior club for those looking for not only fitness but to belong to a friendly community of like-minded people. There’s a wide range of training sessions available, in a range of disciplines, both in the surf and on the beach. And for the kids, they can join the nippers to participate in a range of fun and engaging activities.

For divers, Julian’s Rock is a wonderful spot, with an incredibly diverse array of marine life to take in and a range of depths for beginners to more experienced divers. Located within the Cape Byron Marine Park, you might see grey nurse sharks, manta rays, loggerhead turtles and much more.

If you prefer your water a little less salty from time to time, check out the Lennox Aquatic Centre located only 10 minutes drive from Ballina. There’s a six-lane, 25-metre indoor heated pool that is open all year round for swimming laps, as well as a fully-equipped gym for all your cardio and weight training exercises. There are also classes available for all ages, as well as squads covering a range of disciplines.

If you want to get fit and stay fit, get down to Byron Bay Gym and Fitness. There’s a wide range of training and fitness facilities available, as well as on-site professionals who can help you tackle all aspects of your health goals.

Overlooking the ocean in Byron Bay is the Sattva Yoga Byron Bay studio, where you can join a range of yoga classes and also benefit from remedial massage sessions. Offering hatha, hatha vinyasa, slow gentle yoga styles and also private lessons – there is no level of experience required, just an enthusiasm for the practice of yoga and all the benefits that come from it.

If you’re in Ballina, the Lennox Yoga studio is a short 10-minute drive north offering yoga and wellness classes that are accessible for the whole community. They also offer online classes for those who can’t always make it to one of the scheduled classes, or who may be located further away but would like to practice yoga with the studio.

From the fresh ocean air to the scent of the natural Australian bush, there’s always a wonderful way to get active or just catch your breath here in the twin shires of Byron and Ballina.
