Why winter is the perfect time for hiking in Northern NSW
Winter is the perfect time to get out and enjoy some of the many different coastal walks that this region has to offer. Even though you might prefer to be tucked up inside, nice and warm in front of the fire, this really is one of the very best times to go out exploring. And, don’t worry. Once you’re out and about, you’ll warm up in no time.
There are so many reasons why you should get out and about this winter and enjoy all the exhilarating walks found around the Northern NSW coastline and beyond. Here are just a few reasons why winter is the best time for hiking:
- It’s more comfortable because you won’t get overheated or bothered by flies and mosquitos. Especially in a humid climate, winter allows you to enjoy your walks without constantly sweating and having to stop to cool down.
- It’s easier to cool down by stripping off layers. You might start off wearing multiple layers because your body hasn’t warmed up yet. But, once you start moving, you’ll soon feel warmer and can ditch some of the layers if you get too hot.
- In the sub-tropics, winter is usually the dry season, so you’re likely to enjoy more sunshine and less rain. And, that lovely winter sun will warm you up fairly quickly.
- Snakes are hibernating and you’ll find fewer leeches and ticks at this time of the year.

Our favourite walking tracks for you to explore
There are so many interesting places for a hike or even just a leisurely walk around Northern NSW. We’ve decided to focus on just a few coastal walks to get you started. Bear in mind that some of the national parks in the hinterland are still closed for repairs so why not try one of these superb coastal walks instead.
This is a lovely coastal walk that takes you to Lennox Point and the Pat Morton Lookout. There are two starting points for this easy walk that are even stroller friendly:
- At the end of Dress Circle Road
- At the end of Rutherford Street where you’ll find a small car park
Pat Morton Lookout at the end of the walk is a prime spot for whale-watching and winter is the best time to spot migratory whales. You might also spot some dolphins frolicking in the surf.

Pat Morton Lookout to East Ballina Coastal Walk
We love this walk for whale watching, checking out the surfers and hang gliders, or the access to Lennox Head for its collection of shops, cafés and restaurants. You can walk the whole trail (or cycle) to Ballina or take in the scenery while walking part of the way.
Byron Bay Lighthouse Walk Around Cape Byron
This scenic 4 km track takes you to the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse. Plus, you’ll have the privilege of standing on the most easterly point of mainland Australia along the walk. It’s also the perfect place to do some whale spotting. You can access the walk from Bay Street.
If you’re a bit of a history buff, why not head to Kingscliff and take the Wommin Bay Memorial Walk. You’ll find the entrance on the corner of Murphy’s Road and McKissock Drive, Kingscliff. It’s an easy concrete pathway with numerous memorial plaques along the way that depict historical conflicts in which Australia has been involved.

This coastal nature reserve is just 4 km south of Byron Bay with the entrance on Broken Head Beach Road. You can start the walk along the Two Sisters track from the Broken Head Caravan Park. This clifftop walk gives you stunning views over the ocean and is just 800 meters one way. Another great walk for doing some whale spotting during the winter months.
Our own Northern Rivers rail trail
One walk to look out for is the Northern Rivers Rail Trail,. This 130-km-long trail will connect Murwillumbah, Byron Bay, Bangalow, Lismore and Casino.
